1969 2009

The past 40 years has seen a number of changes for all of us.  I will never forget the day my father was killed, the passing of a great American, John Wayne, my moving away from Delaware and the cultural shock I went through when I settled in Arizona for a short time.  Then there was the major event that rocked our nation, the World Trade Towers and our country being plunged into another war.  These are just a few of the events that have affected my life over the past 40 years.

I left high school and went to Delaware Technical school in Georgetown and tried to continue the way I was in high school.  I found out quickly that the two worlds were completely different.  I was unprepared for what confronted me and so I decided to enlist in the Navy.  For me, that was a mistake, I was not the military type.  Within six months I was honorably discharged for something I never thought about.  Do you know that if you walk in your sleep, no branch of the military wants you.  So here I am, back at home in Delaware and I begin my college career at Delaware State with a completely different attitude toward school.  During my second year of college I met my first wife and as a result my first child.  As many of us probably have done, so came my first divorce too.  As a result of the divorce, I devoted my time completely to my real love during this part of my life, Competitive Freestyle Roller Skating.  I skated and practiced 7 days a week and about 6 hours every day until finally at the age of 30, being the oldest freestyle skater at nationals, I placed 9th for intermediate men's freestyle in the whole USA.

This event started a whole new chapter in my life.  I turned pro and started teaching others how to skate and eventually met my second wife.  Through a series of events, I got out of the skating world, finished my education and became a teacher, earned my second decree of divorce and started my next chapter of my life.

The most important thing that has ever happened to me was when I gave my life to Jesus and became a born again Christian.  During this time I was also able to pursue my dream hobby of Cowboy Action Shooting.  Just like it sounds, dress up in mid 1800s clothing, strap on a pair of Colts or look a likes, grab your lever action rifle and your old double barrel shotgun and head for the action.  We shoot live ammo at steel targets and while many of the shooters aren’t real good, everyone has a real great time.  I shoot with the Green Mountain Regulators outside of Marble Falls in Texas.  My wife of 17 years now also shoots with me and when it comes to the rifle, she’s pretty darn good.  I met my present wife on May 30, 1992, and we got married on August 4th, 1992, and have been together ever since.  We live in Texas where both of us have been teaching for 12 years now.  Hey Mr. Layton would be proud of me I think, I am now teaching Calculus, Pre-Cal, Geometry, and Algebra II, and would you believe it, only 4 1/2 more years until retirement.  When I make it to 62, I am done.  We will spend the summer months in Wisconsin with our daughter and family and then return to Texas for the winter months.  My new hobby, along with my CAS shooting, of archery will start taking me to different locations and meeting new and different people around the state and hopefully the country.  I just finished up a wild hog hunt over the Christmas break and even though I didn’t get one, it was still a lot of fun.  Being surrounded by all the animals and all I had was a bow and arrow.  Sure am glad they were more scared of me, especially since I was out numbered 32 to 1.

If you are ever in Central Texas, please give me a call and make arrangements to stop by.  We have plenty of room and you all are welcome.
