War
protests on The Green. The Usual Booth at Mort's Deli. The apartment in back of
Bowdle's Furniture Store. Acme parking lot death-threats. Damn wasn't that just
yesterday? Where did that 40 years go? Here's about all I can remember:
After Dover, I played and sang in a lot of sketchy bars and college coffeehouses
in Philly, NYC and Virginia (even one at U-D in Newark). Married Beverly Fordham
(she had lived in Rodney Village). Did a stint back in Dover as a photographer
for the Delaware State News (where my then father-in-law was Advertising
Director). Commercial photographer in Boston shooting catalogs. Traveled. Back
to Virginia where son Sean was born in '77. Got a couple of degrees. Taught at a
college. Designed some books. Ended up a TV station art director - from there to
many stations around the country, writer-producer, senior creative director,
etc. and finally manager of advertising and promotion for NBC in San Diego.
After 12 years I left and now have my own little production company, doing
commercials, documentaries, and corporate videos (and sometimes shooting for 60
Minutes or Dateline). Beverly and I parted ways in '93. Luckily, I found Marti a
few years later and strangely, she agreed to marry me. She brought 2 beautiful,
classic over-achiever daughters to the mix. One married a San Diego cop and just
blessed us with our first grandson. Meanwhile, son Sean (a writer) got married
last year, lives in LA. Step-daughter Ali just returned from 2 years teaching in
Africa. Marti (a mortgage broker/realtor) and I live out in the country north of
San Diego with our avocado and citrus groves, and a pond full of bass and Rouen
ducks that I raised. I still play piano and guitar every day, and once in a
while I'll write a commercial jingle or a sports music package. Otherwise I
spend my time making beer, fishing, doing carpentry, and riding my motorcycle.
Marti puts up with me. We thank our lucky stars each day we are healthy, happy,
and have each other.
